The Specialty Materials name is being retired. POLI-TAPE — the German parent company that acquired SM in 2022 — has folded the entire product line under the POLI-TAPE brand and handed exclusive U.S. and Canadian distribution to a single company: FDC Graphic Films in South Bend, Indiana.
If you're a shop owner who's been buying ThermoFlex Plus, ThermoFlex Turbo, or any SM product from a regional distributor for the past five or ten years, here's what that means in plain language: your distributor now has to buy from FDC before selling to you. That's an extra markup between the manufacturer and your shop. And you're the one who pays for it.
The Math That Should Worry You
Let's say you buy 200 yards of standard HTV per month. That's a modest volume for any production shop running a few dozen orders a week.
Before the consolidation, your regional distributor bought from Specialty Materials at one price and sold to you at a margin. Normal, fair, worked fine.
Now that same distributor buys from FDC (who bought from POLI-TAPE), and sells to you. Two margins instead of one between the factory and your press.
Even if each layer only adds $0.50 per yard — and it's often more — that's $100/month out of your pocket. Over a year, $1,200 in added cost for the exact same vinyl.
Some of you buy far more than 200 yards a month. Do your own math.
You Don't Have to Absorb This
The vinyl didn't change. The adhesive is the same. The press settings are the same. The performance is the same. The only thing that changed is who's between you and the product — and how many hands it passes through before it reaches your shop.
You have two choices:
Option A: Stay in the new POLI-TAPE → FDC → your distributor → you supply chain, accept the price increase, and watch your margin on every vinyl job shrink.
Option B: Source equivalent professional-grade HTV directly from a wholesale supplier who sells to production shops at wholesale pricing, ships same-day, and doesn't add unnecessary layers between you and your materials.
What "Equivalent" Actually Means
We know what some of you are thinking: "I've used ThermoFlex for years. I know exactly how it cuts, weeds, and presses. I don't want to switch."
Fair. But here's what ThermoFlex Plus actually is: a polyurethane heat transfer vinyl, approximately 100 microns thick, matte finish, rated for 50+ washes, applicable at 305-320°F for 15 seconds. It weeds cleanly, has a soft hand, and layers well.
That describes every professional-grade PU HTV on the market. The formulations are not identical between brands, but the performance envelope is the same. If you put a ThermoFlex design and an equivalent design from another major brand on the same shirt, washed them both 50 times, and handed them to your customer, they could not tell the difference.
Don't take our word for it — buy a test roll and prove it to yourself. We'll ship it today.
What KimsDirect Offers That Your Old Supply Chain Doesn't
Wholesale pricing without the distribution markup. You're buying from us, we ship to you. No intermediary taking a cut between the factory and your door.
Same-day shipping on in-stock orders. If you order by the cutoff time, it ships today. Not "ships in 3-5 business days." Today. Because when you run out of white HTV on a Wednesday with 200 jerseys due Friday, three business days isn't an answer.
A real person answers the phone. When you need to know if a product will work on a specific fabric, or you need to change an order, or you need a recommendation — you talk to someone who knows the product. Not a chatbot. Not a ticket system.
No minimum order games. You don't have to buy a case of 10 rolls per color to get wholesale pricing. Buy what you need, at the price you need, when you need it.
Make the Switch in One Order
Here's what we'd suggest for a ThermoFlex shop testing the transition:
- Pick your top 3 colors (probably black, white, and one other).
- Order one roll of each from KimsDirect at wholesale pricing.
- Press them on your standard blanks with your normal settings.
- Wash-test alongside your current ThermoFlex inventory.
- Compare the cost per yard.
If our product performs the same and costs less, switch your next full restock to us. If it doesn't, you've lost nothing — you have three perfectly usable rolls of vinyl.
